Yes, Bichons can swim Really well. We have had all our Bichons in Our Swimming Pool. They will swim from one side of the pool to the other. When we get our Bichons close to the water they begin paddling their short legs like crazy. We put them in and they will swim from side to side of the pool.

Many times in the summer we put our dogs in our pool to give them a bath. The bichons Have a very soft white coat, but like all white items, they get dirty easily. We joke and say they look like dirty wash Rags.

Two areas of Caution

  • One – we have a set of stairs in one end of our pool so they can paddle over to the stairs and get out of the pool. Being very small dogs if they cannot easily get out. It would be easy to for them to get tired. They are not able to get to an edge and lift themselves up to climb out. They are just too little
  • Second – If your pool has a liner it is possible for them to swim to one side or corner and trying to get out, not purposely tear your pool Liner.

Do Bichon Frise Like Water

No, we can’t speak for all bichons . But the dogs we have had over 30 years were very good swimming but we never did see one jump in on their own. We would have to pick them up and carry them into the pool.

They do not seem to be afraid of it but now the type of Dog to just run and jump in on their own. we have had many Bichons , at one time we had 9 Females and one male.

We were having many Litters each Year. It was great because puppies are so enjoyable to have around. Most of our Dogs did not Like Baths. They are small so we would wash them in our sink. So they would try to leave when they could.

They Studied 8 different Breeds. They found that when a dog was swimming it was moving it legs at the same pace as if it was trotting on land. They found that all of the dogs they studied swam in the same manner, regardless of Breed.

Even as people start to learn to swim. The first stroke they learn is the Dog Paddle – named after watching dogs swim. Our Bichons swam well, holding their head above the water as they paddled.

I wanted to add this Caution. We have known many people who have owned pools, and have experienced a dog drowning in their Pool. When dogs play or go in and out of a point they can swim until they can touch the ground then walk out.

Swimming pools just about all have a ledge that goes completely around the pool. So a dog that falls in, or accidentally Jumps in is unable to get out. Our swimming pool we are constantly finding squirrels, and frogs that have had the same problems.

No, As far as today’s their classifications of Breeds. Bichons are descended from Barbet or ( Water Spaniel ) which are classified as Water Dogs. Also, descents from the Barbet are these Breeds

The family of Bichons came from same lineage but they were called Barbichon group of Dogs. They are

  • Bichon Bolognese
  • Bichon Havanese
  • Bichon Maltese
  • Bichon Tenerife.

Because of there use and traveling with sailors of Spain and Portugal. The Breed mostly Populated Mediterranean area, and the Canary Islands.
